FAQs

Q: Can a UPSC Civil Services aspirant also apply for IFoS?

A: Yes, but you must select both services in the Preliminary application form. Note that while the Prelims exam is common, the cutoff for IFoS is typically higher than for the Civil Services.

Q: What are the educational eligibility criteria for IFoS?

A: Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree with at least one of the following subjects: Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, and Zoology, or a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Forestry, or Engineering.

Q: Are there physical and medical standards for IFoS officers?

A: Yes. Since the job involves fieldwork in challenging terrains, there are minimum physical standards:

  • Height: Minimum 163 cm for Men and 150 cm for Women (relaxable for ST and candidates from specific hilly regions like Gorkhas and Garhwalis).

  • Chest: Minimum 84 cm for Men and 79 cm for Women, with a mandatory 5 cm expansion.

  • Walking Test: Candidates must pass a physical endurance test involving a 25 km walk (Men) or 16 km walk (Women) to be completed within 4 hours.

Q: How many optional subjects do I need for the IFoS Mains?

A: You must choose two optional subjects from the UPSC's approved list. Each subject has two papers, making a total of four optional papers. Note that certain combinations are not allowed, such as:

  • Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering

  • Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

  • Mathematics and Statistics

  • More than one Engineering subject (Civil, Mechanical, and Chemical).

Q: Why should I choose Geology and Forestry as my optionals?

A: Geology and Forestry are considered highly scoring and have a relatively defined syllabus compared to other subjects. At EGF Academy, Our expert faculty specializes in these subjects, providing integrated notes that cover 80-90% of the previous year's questions.

Q: Is the General Knowledge paper in IFoS Mains the same as the GS papers in IAS Mains?

A: No. While the IAS Mains has four General Studies papers, the IFoS Mains has only one General Knowledge paper and one General English paper. The GK paper is 300 marks and includes Indian Polity, History, Geography, and Science, but focuses more on scientific observation and everyday awareness rather than deep social issues.

Q: Are the classes available in Hindi or English?

A: Our classes are Bilingual (Hinglish). We explain complex scientific concepts in Hindi for better understanding while providing high-quality study material in English to ensure you excel in the written examination

Q: How do I access the study material?

A: Once enrolled, you will receive login credentials to our digital portal. You can download PDF notes, access the "Current Affairs for Environment" module, and view recorded lectures 24/7.
